Bristol's Great War
Product ID: 14249
Duration: 90 mins

Details

This souvenir DVD commemorates the centenary of the start of the First World War, by examining the contribution and sacrifices made by the people of Bristol, both at home and overseas. As a major city, and one of Britain’s two main Atlantic ports, Bristol’s role was significant: 55,000 of her men went to war, of whom 6,000 would never return, while her brave seamen defied U-Boats to bring in vital food supplies. Bristol also produced numerous vital products for the war effort, from cigarettes and chocolate to aircraft, munitions and mustard gas, and women began to take on what was previously seen as ‘men’s work’.nary of the start of the First World War, by examining the contribution and sacrifices made by the people of Bristol, both at home and overseas. Branch Lines Of Somerset
Product ID: 14239
Duration: 101 mins.

Details

1st Take’s series of films exploring the Branch Lines of England now takes us to Somerset, as we explore over 160 years of rail travel in the county, with the help of rare archive material and a whistle-stop tour of sites of interest today. Most of Somerset’s branch lines were closed during or before Beeching’s cuts of the 1960s, and these are examined in depth on our journey, from the 792-yard branch at Dunball Wharf near Bridgwater to the industrial railways of North Somerset, the Bristol to Portishead branch, the Cheddar Valley or ‘Strawberry’ Line and the Norton Fitzwarren to Minehead Railway.

A brand new DVD that will take you back to a bygone era when the pace of life was genteel. Driver's Eye View: Exeter to Basingstoke
Product ID: VO1503
Duration: 131 mins.

Details

The West of England line was the Southern Railway's arterial route to the West Country and as such was at one time very busy with express trains to Salisbury, Exeter and Plymouth. It was also the route of the ACE, the Atlantic Coast Express which ran from Waterloo all the way to Padstow on the North Cornish coast. Run down and rationalised in the 1960s, the West of England line became a shadow of its former self. Today, with privatisation, train services and passenger numbers are on the up and we can see the line from the cab of a class 159 DMU, in its recently re-signalled form along with recent redoubled sections of line to improve capacity and flexibility.

BOOK: The New Forest At War
Product ID: BS1501

Details

First published in 2004 this updated edition of The New Forest at War contains additional images and anecdotes which will add both to the reading experience and to visits to the Forest. It documents aspects of the social and military history of this unique area of Britain during the years of the Second World War. The Forest was on the front line of the massive build-up and launch of D-Day in June 1944. Although many parts of Britain contributed to the final assault, it was this part of Hampshire that was used as the primary assembly and departure point. There were over 100,000 troops under canvas and thousands of military vehicles parked in the quiet country lanes throughout the area, and many thousands of ships off the Forest coastline in the waters of the Solent.

About 1st Take Ltd.

1st Take was established in 1993 by Dave Rogers, a history graduate, and Andy Warren, a cameraman and technician. Since that time we have worked closely with historical societies and specialist authors to create a fascinating range of DVDs. After gaining local success with videos on Yate and Chipping Sodbury, we made films on other areas in and around Bristol, before broadening our horizons to focus on subjects such as Aviation, Railways, Trams, Buses, Shipping and the Second World War. We have also made films celebrating Village Life in days gone by, and a series of four volumes entitled Discovering Dorset. All our early work is now available on DVD and we are constantly making new titles every year, as well as showcasing work from other film-makers of a similar nature.

The 1st Take Collection
