The Route Masters (2 DVDs - RELEASE DATE 25.8.14)
Duration: 5 hrs.

Details

With access to 20,000 transport workers - bus drivers, cabbies, road menders and special police units - we see how London really works. There are 23 million journeys in the city every day, and this warm, character-driven, BAFTA-nominated series introduces us to those whose job it is to keep London moving. We cut between the all-seeing eye of the control room and seemingly incompatible transport sub-cultures - from cabbies who resent the ever-increasing number of cyclists, to hard-working surface repair teams who face nightly abuse from drivers stuck in rush-hour gridlock. That the city’s roads work as well as they do is more than impressive, it’s an everyday miracle!

The Railway - Keeping Britain Back On Track (2 DVDs - RELEASE DATE 25.8.14)
Duration: 5 hrs.

Details

Britain has the oldest and one of the busiest railways in the world, with over 1.3 billion journeys every year. Whether it’s delays, overcrowding or fare rises, we all love to complain about the trains: used to being the butt of complaints, the rail industry has always kept itself behind closed doors, until now. With unprecedented access to Network Rail, train companies including Virgin, East Coast, First Great Western and Northern, and the British Transport Police, this six part documentary series goes behind the scenes of one of Britain’s biggest institutions. Filmed over a year and across the country, this candid series gets to know the track-workers, train guards and management who are battling to keep Britain moving - where anything from suicidal people or an unlucky pheasant, to faulty signalling, cable thieves and mother nature can all bring the railway to a grinding halt. These are the people on the frontline who have the unenviable task of managing a congested, complex and often outdated system. Told with humour, warmth and honesty, this DVD set reveals what’s really going on when we’re left fuming on the platform.

The Underground (2 DVDs - RELEASE DATE 25.8.14)
Duration: 5 hrs.

Details

This documentary goes behind the scenes of the world’s oldest, biggest and busiest underground train network, during the biggest overhaul in its history. Made with unique access to London Underground, this series takes us to places we’ve always wanted to see - behind hoardings to reveal massive new engineering works, inside the command centre to find out what running the world’s most complex train set is really like, and into the hidden world of the Tube at night. The series follows key members of the Tube’s 19,000 staff, and with £10 billion currently being spent on the biggest upgrade of any rail network ever, we show how the process of dragging a Victorian infrastructure kicking and screaming into the 21st century doesn’t always run on rails.

Branch Lines Of Dorset
Duration: 100 mins.

Details

This DVD continues a series of films which explores the Branch Lines of England, many of which were lost during the Beeching cuts of the 1960s. Dorset’s lines were shared almost equally between the GWR and the LSWR, and every one is explored on this film. These routes varied from lightly built, rural railways with a low volume of traffic to the Swanage branch, which at times carried main line express locomotives. These railways conveyed goods in and out of the county, provided a vital role during the dark years of warfare and in happier times they allowed holidaymakers and day trippers to enjoy their visit to the seaside.

About 1st Take Ltd.

1st Take was established in 1993 by Dave Rogers, a history graduate, and Andy Warren, a cameraman and technician. Since that time we have worked closely with historical societies and specialist authors to create a fascinating range of DVDs. After gaining local success with videos on Yate and Chipping Sodbury, we made films on other areas in and around Bristol, before broadening our horizons to focus on subjects such as Aviation, Railways, Trams, Buses, Shipping and the Second World War. We have also made films celebrating Village Life in days gone by, and a series of four volumes entitled Discovering Dorset. All our early work is now available on DVD and we are constantly making new titles every year, as well as showcasing work from other film-makers of a similar nature.
