Description
Picking up the story in 1961, the second part of this engrossing series follows the chain of events after Beeching was appointed as the first Chairman of the British Railways Board. His task was to draw up a plan to eliminate the network’s losses and to reorganise the railways for the future. It was a job that would secure his place in British Railway history, albeit somewhat ignominiously.
Full description from the producer:
Diesel Haulage in Ireland. Double box set.
Filmed on trips during 1996 and 1997, all types are seen at work across the vast majority of the CIE network, including some DEMU action in Belfast. Passenger traffic dominates with Class 071, 121, 141, 181 firmly in the lead. 201s are also seen at work along with a stored A class loco at Limerick. Once again, steam heat dominates on the lesser used lines.
There are a number of runs behind Class 141 and 181 locos as well as some sequences behind 071 and 121. 071s dominate the Waterford and Sligo services with the smaller GM machines working the lesser routes. Freight work is also seen with beat traffic, engineers’ trains, ammonia tanks, Guinness and boxes all making an appearance. A cab ride on 170 whilst acting as station pilot at Dublin Heuston, gives a from the footplate view of the complications and action on offer in the capital. All this variety has now been lost to a new generation of plastic units and as such, this DVD is pure history.
If you enjoyed Ireland before the CAF or are just curious as to what was happening not so far away across the Irish sea, then this DVD will be a treat!
