This is a compelling summary of the history of the Hollywood musical from the 1920s to the 21st century, using clips from some of the greatest moments in song and dance ever committed to film.

This celebration of song and dance begins with Busby Berkeley’s exquisite black and white choreographed extravaganzas that lightened the dark days of the Depression, continues through the rousing wartime songfests, into the heyday of the great MGM spectaculars, and on to the 21st century, exploring recent smash hits like ‘Chicago’ and ‘Dreamgirls’.

The programme showcases extraordinary movie clips featuring the best tunes and choreography ever filmed, rarely seen behind the scenes footage, and new interviews with performers including Liza Minelli, Shirley McLaine, Mickey Rooney, Rita Moreno, Debbie Reynolds, Leslie Caron, Jane Russell,  Tab Hunter, Joel Grey and directors such as Bill Condon (‘Dreamgirls’) and Rob Marsh (‘Chicago’) among others.

Hosted by Academy Award Winner Shirley Jones.
