Cab Ride: York (Thrall Europa) to Hull (Anlaby Road Jn) via – Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington

One of the highlights of autumn 2024 was the return of 37/0s to RHTT operation with three Colas IM locos outbased at York, to work the Scarborough – Hull – Selby circuit. Running seven days a week, as headcode 3J51, and starting and finishing at the York Thrall Europa depot each day, the NE05 circuit takes a different route, depending on the day of the week, with a short or long day – the long day being almost 15 hours, taking in a fascinating criss-cross route via the Yorkshire coast.

37116, 37175 and 37254 were the trio involved and this is a cab ride filmed with 116+175 in the familiar top and tail mode, on a fine autumn day in October 2024.

Starting out from York, we head firstly to Scarborough and after a change of ends, run along the coast, passing Filey, Hunmanby, Bridington and Beverley, through to Anlaby Junction, the Hull avoider. On a mixture of single and double track running, we pass many fine stations, signals, signal boxes and even though part of the route has been upgraded, there are still numerous semaphore signals and traditional level crossings.

The full 98-mile journey is shown and by the very nature of this train, it’s not particularly fast or noisy, but it’s a fascinating insight into what these 37s do, running over lines that have rarely – if ever – been filmed from the cab before. Maps, on-screen captions and minimal narration. A thrash cam in the back cab records the locos at work and ambient sounds.
