Unparalleled documentary footage from a pivotal point in history
A Year to Remember, the classic series that recalls the definitive events of the 20th century, compiles contemporary news coverage drawn from the world famous British Pathé archive. Pathé News set the standard for cinematic journalism, keeping audiences both informed and entertained for the better part of a century.
This programme does the same for a new generation and details not only the major political issues that dominated the day, but also key social changes and cultural trends. This hour-long episode chronicles that remarkable year, 1949.
This dramatic year sees Europe’s post-war regeneration gathering pace, including the end of rationing and the end of the Berlin Blockade and Airlift. The federal republic of Germany is created on May 23rd and this same year sees China become the communist rule People’s Republic of China. Anti communist hysteria, also known as the ‘Red Scare’, sweeps across America and the global relationships began to chill as the Cold War began to dominate the world. American President Harry H. Truman was inaugurated and Britain enjoyed the arrival of the latest lace stockings from Paris.
