Text from Producer:
A Year to Remember, the classic series that recalls the definitive events of the twentieth century, compiles contemporary news coverage drawn from the world-famous BBC and British Pathé archives.
This programme details not only the major political issues that dominated the day, but also key social changes and cultural trends. This hour-long episode chronicles that remarkable year, 1959.
This was the year in which Fidel Castro s revolution triumphed in Cuba; another island, Cyprus, resolved its future, at least for the time being; a refugee problem was turning into a crisis in Hong Kong; and the Queen conquered Chicago on a state visit. Back in Britain, the brand-new M1 motorway was seen as a symbol of growing prosperity, the Conservative Party won a comprehensive electoral victory, and we all liked Ike when he flew in to see us.
1959 was certainly a year to remember.
