Text from Producer:
A Year to Remember, the classic series that recalls the definitive events of the 20th century, compiles contemporary news coverage drawn from the world famous BBC and British Pathé archive.
This programme details not only the major political issues that dominated the day, but also key social changes and cultural trends. This hour-long episode chronicles that remarkable year, 1979.
This eventful year sees a dramatic change in leadership across the globe. In Iran the Shah is overthrown during the revolution and driven into exile. Pakistan’s deposed Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto is hanged. Margaret Thatcher becomes Britain s Prime Minister, the first woman to ever hold that position. In the Middle East, 30 years of hostility between Israel and Egypt comes to an end. Backin the UK, the IRA strikes again, this time killing top Tory MP Airey Neave with a car bomb. And finally, the annual Oxford vs. Cambridge boat race caused quite a stir.
1979 was without a doubt a year to remember.
